The 40/40/20 Workforce

Three things happened this week that tell you where the workforce is headed.

1. Rich Wilson, CEO of Gigged.AI, says the future is 40% full-time employees, 40% contingent workers, 20% AI agents. This is not theory. Davie Gow, CTO at Arnold Clark (11,500 employees), is already building it. They went from a blanket ban on contractors to a scalable blended workforce in under two years.
2. $165 billion in investment needs 20,000 workers who do not exist yet. At our community call last week, Matt Vuckov shared what he is seeing in industrial reshoring. TSMC is building 12 semiconductor fabs outside Phoenix. The investment is $165 billion.1 80% of the technicians needed are not in the labor market today. This is a $4 billion+ talent transformation that every workforce company should be pursuing.
3. 8 in 10 companies now plan to hire freelancers. Meta is cutting 8,000 jobs starting May 20.2 Microsoft offered buyouts to 8,750. But the work is not disappearing. Nearly 8 in 10 employers now plan to hire freelancers in the next three months, outpacing demand for full-time knowledge roles.3

The pattern is clear: companies are not shrinking their workforce. They are re-engineering how they access it.

We see the impact every day. &FRIENDS delivered 125+ creative assets across 6 countries in 4 weeks for Audi. Model B drove a 2,216% click-rate increase for Cybersixgill. Wripple deployed a 6-person team to launch Equifax Ignite. Uncompany rebranded 12 Tupelo Honey locations for under $200K. The Bench deployed 200+ contractors across 1,000+ event days for State Farm.

  • FMS momentum building: Freelance Management System searches are up 125% quarter over quarter. Companies managing large contingent workforces are comparison-shopping the tools to do it compliantly.
  • ChatGPT is now a discovery channel: We are seeing traffic from ChatGPT and Bing alongside Google. LLMs are becoming how companies discover workforce solutions.
