Talent disruption is finally here.

• Business is booming. The S&P Global flash composite PMI hit 56.0 in August, the strongest reading since April 2022. Q3 growth is tracking near 3.0% annualized, roughly double Q2's 1.5%. • JPMorgan's layoffs hit an 11-year peak. 774 roles cut between February and July, the most since 2015. In the same stretch the bank posted record revenue in three divisions and closed in on a $1 trillion valuation. • Ghost jobs are a problem, as roughly one in five postings is a ghost job. The government's now getting involved, with a New York bill fining third-party job posters, along with employers, $2,500 per ad per platform. • Generalist talent marketplaces are stalling, with active buyers falling nearly 18% year over year for one marketplace, growth stalling at 2% to 4% for another, and core marketplace revenue down 12% for another. This is the total opposite of what we see for specialized talent sourcing platforms.

Happy Monday! Every Monday I break down the top stories powering your week. If you want the hiring side analysis, check out Tony's newsletter.

Here's what stories stand out to start the week:

•  Business is booming. The S&P Global flash composite PMI hit 56.0 in August, the strongest reading since April 2022. Q3 growth is tracking near 3.0% annualized, roughly double Q2's 1.5%.[1]
•  JPMorgan's layoffs hit an 11-year peak. 774 roles cut between February and July, the most since 2015. In the same stretch the bank posted record revenue in three divisions and closed in on a $1 trillion valuation.[2]
•  Ghost jobs are a problem, as roughly one in five postings is a ghost job.[3] The government's now getting involved, with a New York bill fining third-party job posters, along with employers, $2,500 per ad per platform.[4]
•  Generalist talent marketplaces are stalling, with active buyers falling nearly 18% year over year for one marketplace, growth stalling at 2% to 4% for another, and core marketplace revenue down 12% for another.[6] This is the total opposite of what we see for specialized talent sourcing platforms.

Here's what I think this week's headlines show...

1. Now is the time. Disruption is FINALLY happening in the talent space, and it's challenging EVERY conventional norm in the traditional talent world.

John Healy, 30+ year veteran that ran Kelly's Office of the Future of Work, told us about how he used AI to bring an enterprise's talent capabilities into two clicks.

How did he do this? Hint...he didn't ask HR or Procurement how.

2. It's still not easy, and definitely not a typical tech disruption.

If I had a penny for every time a tech founder got frustrated in this talent space and gave up, I'd probably be able to afford a house. First it was founders believing the "freelance" world would create the uber for work. Then founders believing talent marketplaces would replace the relationships needed to help hiring managers. Now it's AI recruiters...

But as I discussed with Lee Cage Jr., true change in this space comes from change management, deep relationships, and clear, intentional, linear growth.

So while it's true that the talent industry is finally getting disrupted, it still won't be the typical PLG (product led growth) rocketship growth that tech is used to.

3. I think layoffs, ghosting, and a growing economy are three catalysts opening the door for flexible work.

•  A growing economy is the catalyst to move and to hire[1]
•  Layoffs are the catalyst to knowing traditional talent channels aren't working[2]
•  Ghosting legislation supports the layoff logic in that traditional talent doesn't work[3][4][5]

We all know good things happen in threes - I think flexible talent found its three.

4. Our data shows the best position to be is specialized sourcing OR an EOR (or best case, both).

Specialized sourcing like Remotely for developers, Wripple for marketers, and Uncompany for designers is winning over traditional staffing. Of the 20 most-viewed solution profiles on our platform over the last 30 days, just one is a generalist marketplace.[7]

EORs are also having their moment. FoxHire for healthcare. GreenLight.AI for talent marketplaces. It makes sense. The number one blocker from companies is they want talent that's a part of their team, and with independent contractors that's too risky. BUT with an EOR, companies have the specialization, speed, and flexibility of talent platforms, with the security/safety of a W2 thanks to the EOR.

We'll discuss this on Thursday.

Here's how Human Cloud is helping:

For 10+ years we've created the category that is now flexible talent. Whether the Human Cloud book being published by HarperCollins, the Human Cloud Podcast hitting #1 globally, or our dinners attracting 15+ executives, we've done the hard work of curating the community of buyers that are looking to invest in flexible talent, not just throw reqs over the fence.

Now with the platform, we see 3.5k+ buyers coming to find, vet, and deploy the best flexible talent solutions. That's you! And we can't wait to see you all on Thursday for this month's community call »

See you all soon,

- Matt

ManpowerGroup, Robert Half Shares Surge Despite Analyst AI Warnings
