Eric Ly, Co-Founder & CEO at KarmaCheck

Eric Ly co-founded LinkedIn and served as its founding CTO. Today he runs KarmaCheck, a background check and credentialing company focused on healthcare. On the Human Cloud Podcast he explains why the least glamorous process in a hospital is the one that decides its margin.

Healthcare Credentialing Is the Path to Revenue

Ask most executives where AI will change healthcare and they point to diagnosis, drug discovery, or personalized care. Eric Ly points somewhere else. He points at healthcare credentialing, the checks every nurse and doctor has to clear before they can treat a patient, and he calls it the path to revenue.

The logic is simple once you see it. A health system does not get reimbursed for care delivered by a provider who is not yet credentialed. Every week a doctor waits on that process is a week of care not delivered and revenue not collected. Compress it and the whole system moves faster.

"Credentialing is a key process because it's the path to revenue. It's the path to reimbursement. That's how healthcare and health systems get paid for the care that they provide. So if you can have a doctor that can get credentialed that much faster, from six months down to one month, that's going to mean more revenue and better care." — Eric Ly

KarmaCheck is built to make that compression routine. Eric describes credentialing as a super-charged version of background checks, and the company's job is to make the process as fast, effortless, and convenient as possible so qualified professionals get to the bedside sooner.

Administrative Burden: The 50-Year Chart Every Leader Should See

The reason credentialing matters so much comes from one chart Eric keeps returning to. Over roughly 50 years, the number of healthcare providers in the United States has stayed relatively flat. Layer the number of administrators on the same axis and the line goes up and to the right the entire time.

"If you're providing the same amount of care, but your administrative burden is increasing all the time, this is a symptom of runaway costs in the healthcare industry." — Eric Ly

Eric is careful not to blame a single cause. Many health systems are nonprofits with a mission built around care, not budgets. The regulatory framework around providers is good and also expensive. The litigious environment adds cost on top. His conclusion is that nobody will find one root cause, so the useful move is to pick a thread, pull on it, and see how far the cost comes down.

Credentialing and revenue cycle are that thread for KarmaCheck. And the same shape shows up in every compliance-heavy industry, which is why Eric believes the model travels well beyond healthcare.

Back Office Automation Beats Front Office AI

This is the part of the conversation that applies to every talent leader, not only the ones in healthcare. Eric's view is that the AI market is crowded in the front office and nearly empty in the back office.

"There's a lot of sexy AI in the front office, interviewing candidates, doing matching, that sort of thing. But I frankly think that there's a ton of opportunity that very few people are focused on in terms of applying AI in the back office. When you can take a big chunk off of the administrative costs and processes in the back office, you're going to win as an organization." — Eric Ly

He is equally clear about what back office automation is not. It is not deploying a chatbot across the team and calling it a transformation. It is finding the specific processes where measurable value lives and rebuilding them.

"There's definitely much deeper work going on, and to look for those solutions that really bring the value measurably to our organizations. The companies that exist in five years will be very much a hybrid between lots of AI and people too. But it's going to be a very different mix." — Eric Ly

Eric also settles the AGI question in a way that frees leaders from waiting for a finish line. He studied AI in college, knew the theoretical limits of today's architectures, and was a skeptic. He is not anymore, and the reason is practical rather than philosophical.

"At some point, despite the limitations, the technology has already gotten so good that it's almost an academic question whether we're pre-AGI or post-AGI. Honestly, it doesn't matter. It's good enough and it's capable enough to do so many things." — Eric Ly

Why Every Talent Function Has the Same Disease

Swap the words and Eric's chart describes talent buying. Companies did not fix how they find, vet, and onboard workforce partners. They added process. Procurement checklists, vendor management layers, compliance reviews repeated for every new provider. The care, in this case the actual work, stayed flat while the administration around it grew.

That is the problem Human Cloud exists to solve. We are the single front door to more than 1,000 flexible talent solutions, where discovery, evaluation, and engagement happen in one place instead of across a dozen spreadsheets and a consultant's network. Compliance is handled once at the platform level rather than re-litigated for every vendor. KarmaCheck bends the credentialing curve inside healthcare. Human Cloud bends the vendor curve for every company that runs on flexible talent.

Eric's advice to leaders lands the same way from either side. Be open-minded about the technology. Then do the deep, unglamorous work of finding the process that gates revenue in your business and taking the administrative cost out of it.

The Bottom Line

Healthcare credentialing looks like paperwork and behaves like a revenue lever. Eric Ly built KarmaCheck on that insight, and the pattern generalizes: the biggest AI wins for the next five years will come from back office automation in compliance-heavy functions, not from another front office tool. Leaders who find their version of credentialing, and fix it, will have the margin to outlast the ones still adding administrators.
